Ways to Retain Your Members and Keep Your ERG Active

Starting an ERG is one thing. Keeping it going is something else entirely.

Many networks launch with strong attendance and enthusiasm, only to see things tail off after a few months. It’s a common challenge, especially when ERG leads are juggling everything on top of their day jobs.

If you're looking to build something that lasts, it’s worth asking: how do we keep people engaged beyond the launch?

Here are a few strategies that can help.

Make room for regular, low-pressure connection

Not everything needs to be a major event. Sometimes the most meaningful moments come from smaller, informal touchpoints. Try setting up a drop-in coffee chat each month, creating a WhatsApp group, or starting a ‘quick share’ internal newsletter. The goal is to keep energy flowing without burning out your core team.

Remind people what you’re here for

Clarity of purpose is key. When members lose sight of the ERG’s focus, it becomes easier to disengage. Keep your mission visible by linking your work to wider company goals, reflecting on cultural moments throughout the year, and consistently communicating what your group is working toward.

Involve members in ways that feel manageable

Sometimes people want to help but aren’t sure how. Giving members clear, bite-sized ways to contribute keeps them involved and invested. Invite someone to co-host an event, write a blog, or lead a short wellbeing session. Engagement often grows when people feel they’re shaping something, not just attending.

Ask for honest feedback and use it

Don’t assume you have to guess what people want. Check in regularly. What’s landing well? What’s missing? How can we make this space more inclusive or accessible? Showing that you’ve listened and made changes is a powerful way to build loyalty.

Celebrate what’s working

Whether it’s a successful event, a powerful moment of connection, or a small group that’s thriving, make time to recognise your progress. You could highlight a member story, share testimonials, or give shoutouts during meetings. People want to be part of something that feels alive and valued.

Retention doesn’t come from having all the answers. It comes from building community, offering relevance, and creating space for people to show up in ways that matter to them.
